How To Do Duet On Tiktok

It's no wonder TikTok is growing more and more in popularity. With neat features, excellent editing skills, and an incredibly broad music selection, users world-wide are creating content everyday.

One of TikTok's more popular features, a duet, allows you to TikTok side by side with other people's videos. This can be quite useful for those who want to grow their TikTok followers, as you could duet a video that went viral, getting your own content in front of just as many or close to as many eyes.

How you do a duet with someone's video, though? That's something that might not be immediately clear, but it is easy to do! Follow along below, and we'll show you how you can do your first duet in TikTok.

What is a Duet?

If you're not quite sure what a duet is in TikTok, you can essentially picture it as a reaction or a parody of an original video on the TikTok platform. Essentially, you come across a video that you think you can add something funny to, or other quality content, and want to create your own spin-off. You can do that with a duet.

A duet puts the original video on one side of the screen, and then you're parody — or what you film — is on the other side of the screen. So, a duet is a side-by-side video, where you try and add something funny and entertaining in-step with the original TikTok video that you're dueting.

Before you duet…

There are some things that you should know before you go and duet a video. The first is that the "duet" option is not always available to you. This is because TikTok users may turn it off for their videos, not wanting anyone to duet their video for one reason or another. They may look at it as content stealing, or maybe they don't want random folks to ruin their brand, the reasons are endless. And either way, duets are turned on or off by the user, on a per-video basis. There's no getting around it.

That said, when the duet tool is available, try and duet with people in your follower or view count range. As your fans and followers grow, start dueting with progressively larger accounts, all the way until you're producing viral videos of your own!

How to duet

When the feature is available, it's quite easy to duet with someone on TikTok. First, make sure your TikTok app is on the latest version, and then open it.

Now, you can scroll through your own feed, or the For You page, and find a video that you think you can duet.

Once you think you find the perfect video, press the share button.

If dueting on TikTok is enabled, you'll see the Duet button at the bottom left corner of the pop-up. Tap it. You'll see a loading screen for a couple of seconds to minutes while TikTok sets things up.

Finally, you'll see the Duet screen. This is where the magic happens. You can press the big red button to record your duet — see here how to record without holding — and there are tons of tools on the side of the screen to edit your duet. You have various video effects, filters, and video speeds that you can select.

Once you're done, you can press the checkmark that appears to the right to head to another editing screen. Here you'll be able to add more filters, stickers, special effects, and more.

Once you're done editing your video, press Next, fill out the description and title of the video, and then press the Post button. Your own duet is now on TikTok. Congratulations!

Troubleshooting the Duet Feature

TikTok isn't without its flaws and several users have reported issues with the Duet feature.

Aside from the fact that the video you're trying to interact with may not have the feature turned on, there are some other things to check. If you're certain a video should allow you to Duet, take some basic troubleshooting steps.

  • Update the App – Go to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and type in TikTok. If an update is available, you'll see it where the 'install' or 'get' button should be.
  • Close the app and reopen it – The issue could be a simple glitch. Close the app and relaunch it then test the Duet feature again.
  • Clear the cache – If you're using an Android go the the Settings > Apps > TikTok > Storage > Clear Cache. If you're using an iPhone go to Settings > TikTok > Offload App. Note: This will delete all of your drafts so be careful.
  • Check your internet connection – If you're on WiFi try switching to cellular data and vise versa.

If none of these work for you, it may be an issue with the app. You can check the DownDetector website for known issues or use the TikTok Support link to get more, personalized, assistance.

Lastly, you could always send a message to the creator to see if they have the Duet feature turned off. Although, not all creators accept DMs from anyone, it's worth a shot. They will need to go to Privacy in TikTok's Settings, tap on 'Privacy' and toggle on the appropriate option for Duets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my videos after I turn the feature off?

If someone has already made a Duet of your video and you decide to turn the feature off, the other person's version remains. The same goes for deleted videos.

But, if someone is doing something with your content you can report them to TikTok. Assuming the added content violates TikTok's community guidelines, the support team will remove it.

Can I stop one person from doing a duet on my videos?

The only way to do this is to block the other users' account. Some users have issues with harassment (i.e. a person doing a duet or stitch with all of their videos), in this case it's useful to block the user.

Closing

As you can see, starting a duet with someone is extremely easy. The most difficult part of creating a duet is trying to come up with funny or quality content that adds to the original video. And don't worry — you'll have a lot of duets that just don't work out or are a flop on TikTok. That can be discouraging — you're putting yourself out there, and hope that people will accept you. Unfortunately, the Internet can be a vicious place.

But don't get discouraged — keep creating content, and eventually you'll have your own hit or viral video that everyone will love. Happy TikTok-ing!
